The Big Boss Sikov Analysis
Part 1: Sikov Example
A man, presumably in his late twenties or early thirties, can be seen gently holding a young woman in the foreground of the scene. The man and woman are in center focus and are facing slightly away from the camera. The man is shirtless and his hands and abdomen are covered in blood. The woman is wearing a short sleeved, white blouse and is clean compared to her male counterpart. In the background of the scene there are three visible men surrounding the man and woman. These men are dressed in light taupe uniforms and hats embellishing a symbol, implying authority. The scenery in the background shows trees, shrubs, and a cloudy skyline.
Part 2: Contextualization
The man holding the woman appears to be carefully touching her cheek, as if he is afraid of getting blood on her. Although the man is gently holding the woman, his face is turned towards her which shows his desire for closeness. The woman's face is almost completely concealed by the man's profile and hand. Even though one cannot see the woman's facial expression, the way she solemnly holds her head gives the scene a feeling of sadness. The men in the uniforms seem to be approaching the man and woman, perhaps to detain one or both of them.

Hi Gabby,
ReplyDeleteVery good explanation! You described Bruce lee very well according to the template of the first chapter. For example, Bruce lee was naked with his upper body and his body was bleeding and so on. At the same time, you also gave a very detailed evaluation of the latter three men's clothing and background. Good! In addition, the book also describes the editing of the lens. For example, in this picture, the lower body of the man is cut off. It would be better if this could be added!
Secondly, you described the psychological activities and hand movements of Bruce lee and the girl incisively and vividly. For example, the man stroked the girl's cheek, and the girl leaned on his shoulder, indicating the girl's love for him. Of course, it would be nice if you could describe the scenes before and after the movie!
Thanks,
Chenyu
Hi Chenyu,
DeleteThank you for your comment. I agree with your statement about the editing of the lens and will remember to include it in my future analyses.

On the first part, not a bad start to a shot screen-cap analysis, but there is a lot more that you could have said about the mise-en-scene. What about the man pointing a gun at the couple to the right? What about the fact that Cheng and Chiao are embracing each other instead of just "facing away from the camera"? On that, where are they facing away from the camera (because they are certainly not facing the same direction)? And the second part is just more of the first. Instead of placing this scene in the context of the movie, we get more of what should have gone in the first part. I'm serious, if you had put what you have written in the second part in the first, it would have made a much more complete screen-cap analysis than what is currently there. That, however, still leaves a complete lack of contextualisation anywhere in your post, which should be easy enough to do since this is the finale of the film. I know my criticisms are a bit harsh, but I hope they are helpful to you as well!
ReplyDeleteHi Ben,
DeleteThank you for your comment. I agree with your statement that I could have said more about the mise-en-scene, I completely overlooked the man was pointing a gun at the couple. As for my contextualization paragraph, I tried to follow Dr. Mizenko's example on the main blog but I may have confused some aspects of the analysis with the contextualization. However, I do believe the contextualization should be what you perceive is happening in the screencap, rather than what we already know happens in the film.

Regarding your mise-en-scene description, you are fairly thorough. You do describe just about everything, however, there are some more specific details about each aspect that you missed; I will try to avoid touching on anything mentioned in the other two comments. You did a very great job of describing the body language of the two people in the center of the frame, but you do not apply this same depth of description to the men in uniforms. The one on the right is holding a firearm and pointing it at the two in the center. His shoulder and back are cut off by the right edge of the frame. The second man in uniform is slightly obscured by the woman and has his hands placed on his hips. The third man in uniform is obscured by the man in front of him and has his hands down to his sides. Each uniformed man is also wearing police dress style hat. Additionally, the shirtless man in the center has his hands in handcuffs. You could also describe in more detail the background. The treeline stretches from the left side of the frame to the right, filling up a large portion of the background. The dark gray clouds fill the rest.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Hi Damian,
DeleteThank you for your comment. You're right that I missed a lot of important details regarding the mise-en-scene. I agree that I could've been more elaborate with my analysis of the men in uniforms. Also, I did not realize the shirtless man was in handcuffs, which if I noticed that detail before writing my analysis I would have written my contextualization differently.
